Riley had her first taste of peanut butter yesterday. It was totally a mistake on Momma's part too! Her doctor had asked us to wait until she's two years old before having peanuts (and any nuts, for that matter). A big part of the reason is it's a choking hazard and another part of it is I have many food allergies (my most severe being shellfish). I am not allergic to peanuts, just tree nuts. My allergist also advises me to stay away but truthfully, I'm (mildly) allergic to so many foods that I eat them anyway and just keep my EpiPen handy. (I know, I'm not a good example!) Shellfish I do completely avoid simply because of the throat swelling reaction I've had when eating it a few times. All other foods are hit or miss and it really depends on how much I eat. Regardless, I am careful when eating and pay attention to any symptoms I may have. So...back to my story. I made a smoothie yesterday for lunch and it included so many random things in it (I'm not about to give away my secret recipe, as you may seriously judge me) and it included peanut butter. I went to hand Riley a cup of it, as she was anxiously waiting for a taste. And as she was sipping I realized it had peanut butter in it - whoops! As of today, she has had no symptoms of an allergic reaction. Thank goodness. Anyway, truth be told my mom accidentally gave her walnuts in a banana muffin she had made too (ha ha, told on ya Mom!) To date, Riley has had no allergic reactions to anything (knock on wood) and I'm just hoping nuts and peanuts are another green light. Her doctor did say that there may be a time you can't avoid nuts completely, and accidents happen, but still encouraged me to wait a bit. Which, at that appointment I admitted Riley had had sunflower seeds already in some bread. Too at her 12 month appointment they told me Riley could have citrus and berries (umm, hello she had already been eating those since 9 months old! Miscommunication - gotta love it.) I've talked to numerous (OK, not numerous but a handful of) mothers of children Riley's age or younger and they all had the go ahead from their doctors to give peanut butter. Maybe it just depends on the doctor and the parents' history of allergies. I felt terrible yesterday though, but today I feel happy that Riley didn't react to peanut butter (at least not yet...). I love peanut butter (one of my most favorite things in the world) and I'm absolutely going to be feeding it to Riley - so if it wasn't going to be yesterday, it was going to be one day anyway! So there, doctors!

climber
Yesterday, I went into the kitchen briefly to clean up after our breakfast. I came back out, into the dining room, and what do I see? Riley sitting on the dining room chair with my iPad in her hands! I had to laugh and grab the camera before taking the iPad away, and making sure she got down safely. Well now we know she can get onto our chairs all by herself! It's funny too because I'm a bit obsessive about pushing our chairs under the table. It bothers me to leave them out. Yet, I left mine out just long enough for little bug to climb up on it. She's growing up too fast!

power outage
Hurricane Irene came through our area this past Saturday and early Sunday.
The wind and rain wasn't as bad as we were expecting.
Though, we did lose power around 2 am Sunday.
When we called to report the outage, we were told it may take up to a week to restore!
We stayed home Sunday, and dealt with no power.
Aaron and I decided we should think about planning for a week without power, just in case.
On Monday, Aaron went to work while Riley and I drove to MD to stay with my parents.
Aaron can sleep at work (worst case scenerio) and at least then he could keep a watch on the house (our cat) and every day check to see if we have power. We had a plan!
Sure enough, shortly after I leave Monday afternoon our power came back on!
Aaron found out that night after getting home from work.
Because I drove to MD, I wasn't in any rush to drive right back.
So Riley and I enjoyed a lovely visit with my parents for a night!
Our thoughts and prayers are with all those that are still dealing with the after effects of Hurricane Irene.

Last week my mom came to stay an overnight with Riley and I.
Aaron was out of town for work.
It was nice having mother-daughter time together.
I know that Riley enjoyed the visit very much too.
