Maryland Zoo
This past weekend was so much fun! Riley & I took a (usual) trip to MD to visit my parents. We did a couple of different things this time around though.
My dad & I went and got a Christmas tree on Saturday, which was a lot of fun.
(I have so many memories of us cutting down our Christmas tree, searching the tree farm for that "perfect" tree!)
We even decorated it! (So I got my dose of tree decorating this year, afterall.)
And on Sunday we all took a trip to Baltimore to visit the zoo!!
Originally, our plan was to take Emillie and Hannah (my step-daughters) with us but Emillie was sick so I was unable to have them this past weekend. We missed them, but I know there will be other future zoo trips done as a family. It's something we need to do with Aaron too!
We had a gorgeous, sunny, weekend. Temps in the lower 50's but the sun really helped. The zoo was not crowded at all (to be expected in December) and really was a perfect time to go! I'm so glad it worked out.
(I bought the tickets on Groupon...awesome site if you don't know about it. I paid $20 total for all of our admission tickets and we also each got a free train ride too. Sweet deal.)

Riley hugging and kissing all the goats was the highlight of the trip. She's a riot!
Apparently, she even kissed one right on the mouth and I missed it!! My mom said someone standing nearby commented on it, saying it was gross or something...well, what can ya do? I'm pretty sure there are far more gross things out there than kissing a goat. Don't worry - I wiped her hands and mouth when we were all through...

While Riley always played with our shoes and has put them on before...she hasn't been as into wearing them as she is now!
She's been wearing my shoes, and her grandparents' shoes when we visit them.

different tree, different Christmas
Last Sunday, after getting home from NY, I was motivated to put up some Christmas decorations.
I kept going back and forth on whether or not to put up our normal, big, Christmas tree. Here's our tree pic from last year. (My hubby is a much better photographer than me!)
Anyway, I decided not to put up our regular tree.
I had a smaller, white, artificial tree that Aaron's parents had given us last year (along with the lights and bulbs for it too!) so I put that up instead. It's pretty cute! Though white isn't my #1 color for a tree (mainly because we don't have anything in the house that is white to go with it...) Regardless, I'm very thankful for the (free) tree and it looks good on one of the end tables near our couch.
I'm so sorry...the picture above does not flatter this tree...it looks so sad and pathetic! Ha ha. I didn't know what settings to use on Aaron's camera and really didn't want to take the time to learn how. My "point and shoot" camera pic will just have to do! Deal with it.
Notice the tree skirt? It's a placemat. You can call it ghetto...but I'd like to call it genius!
If I can be totally honest, I cried a little the day I put up the decorations (yeah, just a little!) because I was missing Aaron. Which is funny in a way, because Aaron hates putting up the decorations for Christmas, while I love it. So you'd think I'd be joyously putting the decorations up by myself, while whistling...and putting them wherever I wanted...without any complaints! ;) Actually, I did do that. Ha ha. But then I cried. I missed him; it felt so odd to be doing it alone without him.
I didn't put up our normal tree for several reasons...
1. I don't have the patience or energy to bring it down from the attic and do all that work. You can say it, LAZY.
2. I didn't want to ask for help (even though I know a few people who would've helped and even offered!)
3. I was afraid if I had that tree up I would be more sad seeing it, knowing that Aaron can't.
4. It's a different Christmas!
#3 and #4 stuck out.
I was thinking of Aaron. If he doesn't have a tree, then I didn't want one either. At least not our normal tree. I think it's only fair that we all go without it this year. It'll make next year all the more special, when we're together.
(Besides, Riley & I will be celebrating Christmas this year with my family so we'll have a big tree to enjoy then!)
So, the little tree won. Because it's a different kind of Christmas around here - I felt it appropriate to put up a different tree. It was fitting. Do you agree or disagree? Actually, I don't care what you think! The little tree is staying.

And different Christmas or not, we are celebrating this holiday season with joy and thanks; and with love in our hearts!

NY Visit - Pics

Once again, I generally got lousy pictures. It can be super hard getting pictures sometimes. Especially when there's a lot going on, or when the little ones are too busy to sit still for a pic...RILEY.
I'm breaking this post in two sections - the Gracie pics and the Riley pics.
For those that don't know, Gracie is our first (and only) niece. She's a little sweetie! I loved seeing her again. She's already grown so much (she's 13 months) and is doing so many more things than she was last July when we saw her. Gracie's favorite word is "hi." Actually, I think right now it's one of her only words! He he. It's super cute hearing her say it. In fact, we came home to Riley saying "hi" more. No joke! It's contagious. Gracie is contagious...she's adorable. I miss her already!
And then there's little Miss Action herself...Riley.
